Hire a Labourer for a Day: Cost, Tasks and Steps

Hire a labourer for a day: casual labourer loading green waste into a trailer at a suburban home

To hire a labourer for a day in Australia, expect to pay roughly $280–400 for an 8-hour day when you book a casual labourer directly in 2026, or $440–600 through a labour hire agency. Day labourers handle site clean-ups, rubbish removal, digging, loading and garden clearing, but not licensed trade work. Rates are indicative; confirm award minimums on Fair Work.

This guide covers what a day labourer can and cannot do, costs, tickets, safety and insurance, and the booking steps. Yakka Labour is the marketplace for hiring labourers directly, not the workwear brand with a similar name.

What can a labourer do in a day?

A general labourer is an extra pair of hands for physical work that does not need a trade licence. Common one-day jobs:

  • Site clean-up between trades: sweeping, removing offcuts, stacking materials, filling skips.
  • Rubbish and green-waste removal from yards, garages and under-house areas.
  • Digging trenches for irrigation or conduit (after a Before You Dig Australia enquiry), post holes and garden beds.
  • Loading and unloading trucks, carrying materials upstairs, moving pavers or sleepers.
  • Barrowing soil, mulch or gravel and spreading it to level.
  • Non-structural strip-outs such as removing old carpet, timber decking boards or garden edging.
  • Assisting a tradesperson by fetching, cutting to marks and cleaning up.

A fit, experienced labourer can usually fill a 6 m³ skip with mixed garden waste in half a day, dig around 10–15 post holes in good soil with a hand auger, or barrow several cubic metres of mulch, depending on access. Narrow side passages, stairs, clay or rock slow everything down, so mention them in your job post.

To get the most out of a single day, have the skip bin or trailer on site before the start time, mark anything that must stay, and clear a path from the work area to the bin. A labourer who spends the first hour waiting for a delivery or asking what to keep is an hour you pay for without progress.

What can't a day labourer do?

Some work needs a licence or ticket no matter how small the job:

WorkWho must do it
Electrical wiring, power points, light fittingsLicensed electrician
Plumbing, drainage and gasfittingLicensed plumber, drainer or gasfitter
Removing asbestos-containing materialLicensed asbestos removalist in most situations
Operating a forklift, crane or boom lift over the licence thresholdWorker with the right high risk work licence
Erecting scaffolding where a person or object could fall more than 4 metresLicensed scaffolder
Residential building work above the state licence thresholdLicensed builder or trade contractor

If the house is older and you are pulling out old fibre-cement sheeting, stop and get it tested for asbestos first. When a task needs a licence, hire the trade and use the labourer to support them.

How much does it cost to hire a labourer for a day?

Booking typeHourly (AUD)8-hour day (AUD)
Casual labourer booked directly, metro$35–48$280–384
Experienced labourer with own ute and tools$45–60$360–480
Labour hire agency bill rate$55–75$440–600
Weekend or public holidayAdd 25–100%Depends on day and award

Indicative 2026 market observations, before super and tip fees. Where a labourer is employed casually on a construction site, the Building and Construction award sets a minimum of 4 hours' pay per engagement plus fares and travel entitlements, so a "quick hour" still costs at least 4 hours. Check the award text and the Fair Work pay guides for the current minimums. A full rate breakdown is in our labourer day rate guide.

Worked example: a homeowner in Hornsby is clearing a side yard before landscaping. Two labourers at $42/hr for 7 hours cost $588, plus a 6 m³ skip bin. Doing it with one labourer would take roughly twice as long and cost about the same in labour, but two people make heavy lifting safer and halve the skip hire days.

Should I book a day labourer, a labour hire agency or a handyman?

Each suits a different job:

  • Day labourer booked directly: best for physical work you can direct yourself, such as clearing, carrying, digging and site clean-ups. Lowest hourly cost, but you plan the work, supply tools and handle the engagement.
  • Labour hire agency: suits businesses that need several workers at short notice, replacements if someone does not turn up, and the agency handling payroll. Expect a higher bill rate because the agency margin and on-costs are built in.
  • Handyperson: better for a list of small fixes that need skill and tools, like hanging doors or patching plaster, within the licensing limits for your state.

Many homeowners combine them: a handyperson or licensed trade for the skilled part, and a labourer for the heavy lifting and clean-up around them. Typical handyperson pricing is covered in our handyman rates guide.

Does a labourer need a white card?

For construction work, yes. SafeWork NSW states that a white card is required for labourers and others carrying out construction work, and that it becomes void if the holder has not done construction work for two consecutive years. Garden clean-ups and furniture moving at a house are not normally construction work, but demolition, renovation strip-outs and work on a building site are. Ask to see the card when you book. Background is in what is a white card.

What safety and insurance duties do I have?

Businesses engaging workers have duties under work health and safety laws to provide a safe workplace, including safe access, PPE where needed, and information about hazards such as buried services, asbestos and working near edges. Even as a householder, brief the labourer on hazards, keep the site tidy and provide water and shade in summer.

If you engage someone as an employee, check whether you need workers compensation cover in your state and pay at least the award rate, plus super. If the labourer runs their own business, ask for an ABN and public liability certificate. Yakka is a marketplace, not an employer or agency, so the hirer and worker agree the engagement between them. How do I hire a labourer for a day on Yakka?

  1. Post the job: suburb, date and start time, a clear task list with photos, tools you supply, tickets needed (white card for construction work) and an AUD hourly rate or day budget.
  2. Review applicants' profiles, tickets and reviews, or browse general labourers near you and invite them to apply.
  3. Message your shortlist to confirm the tasks, parking and finish time, and agree the rate in writing in the app.
  4. On the day, walk the labourer through the job and the hazards, and check in at lunch.
  5. Before they leave, walk the site together to confirm the task list is done, the area is tidy and any tools you lent have been returned.
  6. Approve the hours and pay through the platform. There is no agency margin on top of the agreed rate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a labourer for half a day?

Yes, many labourers accept half-day jobs of around 4 hours, especially close to home. Expect a minimum booking because of travel, and note that the construction award sets a 4-hour minimum payment per engagement for casual employees. Batch tasks so the time is used well, and say in the job post that it is a half-day booking.

Should I provide tools for a day labourer?

Usually the hirer provides specialised tools and equipment, while labourers bring basic PPE such as steel-capped boots, gloves and hi-vis. If you need a wheelbarrow, shovels, a ute or a trailer, say so in the job post. Some labourers bring their own vehicle and tools for a higher hourly rate.

How quickly can I get a labourer?

Same-day or next-day bookings are often possible in metro areas, especially for early starts on weekdays, but availability varies by suburb and season. Posting the job the afternoon before with a clear rate and task list gives the best response. Weekend and public holiday jobs usually need more notice and a higher rate.

Do I pay a day labourer cash?

Paying a set amount through a platform or bank transfer keeps a clear record for both sides. If you engage someone as an employee, tax withholding, super and payslip obligations apply however you pay. Cash with no records creates tax, insurance and underpayment risks. On Yakka, the agreed rate is paid through the platform.

What should I put in a job post for a day labourer?

Include the suburb, start time, expected finish, task list with photos, weight of heavy items, whether a white card is needed, tools and PPE supplied, parking and toilet access, and the hourly rate or day budget in AUD. Specific posts attract better-matched applicants and reduce disputes about scope on the day.
