Forklift Licence Cost (2026): Course Fees and Renewal

A forklift licence (the LF class of high risk work licence) usually costs $350–650 for the TLILIC0003 course and assessment, plus a government licence fee: $95 per class in NSW for 2026–27, and $77.70 in Victoria. Most courses run two to three days, and the licence lasts five years before you renew it.

Below: costs by state, LF versus LO, timing, renewal and the private property question. Yakka Labour is the hiring marketplace, not the workwear brand with a similar name. General information, not legal advice.

How much is a forklift licence in NSW?

In NSW you pay twice: the RTO for training and assessment, then SafeWork NSW for the licence. As indicative 2026 market observations, Sydney RTOs advertise the LF course from about $379 to $540, with some including the assessment fee in a single price of around $470. Add the SafeWork NSW licence fee of $95 per class and most people spend roughly $450–650 all up.

A worked example: a storeperson in Smithfield books a two-day LF course at $420, passes, and applies through MyServiceNSW for $95. Total: $515, plus two days off the roster. If the employer pays for the course, check whether you have to repay it if you leave within a set period, and get that in writing.

Extra costs to budget for

  • Re-assessment fees: if you're found not yet competent, many RTOs charge for a second attempt. Ask before booking.
  • Time off work: two or three unpaid days is often the biggest cost for casual workers.
  • Travel: training yards are usually in industrial suburbs, so factor in fuel or transport.
  • Steel-cap boots and hi-vis: most RTOs require them on the training floor.
  • An LO class later: if you move into order picking, you pay for that course and another class fee.

Government fees for NSW and Victoria come from the regulators' published fee schedules (WorkSafe Victoria high risk work licence). Fee-free or subsidised places are sometimes available through state skills programs for eligible job seekers, so ask the RTO before paying.

LF vs LO: which forklift licence do you need?

SafeWork NSW lists two forklift classes:

  • Forklift truck (LF): a forklift with a mast and an elevating load carriage with fork arms or another attachment, such as the counterbalance forklifts found in most warehouses, yards and building supply stores. The training unit is TLILIC0003 Licence to operate a forklift truck.
  • Order-picking forklift truck (LO): a forklift where the operator's controls rise with the load carriage, used for picking stock from high racking. The unit is TLILIC0004.

The LF licence does not cover order pickers. For most warehouse, freight and building site jobs, LF is the one employers ask for. Add LO if you are targeting distribution centres with high-bay order picking. Telehandlers have separate rules, so check with your regulator before operating one.

If you're unsure which to book, look at ten job ads in your area. In western Sydney, Melbourne's west and Brisbane's southern corridor, most warehouse and yard ads ask for LF only. LO tends to appear in ads for large retail and grocery distribution centres. Starting with LF and adding LO later costs one extra course and one extra class fee, and both classes then expire together with your licence.

How long does a forklift licence take?

  1. Training: two to three days for new operators, sometimes one day for experienced operators doing an assessment-only pathway.
  2. Assessment: in NSW a SafeWork-accredited assessor at the RTO assesses you and issues a Notice of Satisfactory Assessment (NSA).
  3. Application: in NSW you must apply within 60 days of the NSA date. You can show the NSA, valid for 60 days, or your digital licence while the photo card is posted.

What's on the forklift course?

Expect a mix of classroom and yard time. The theory covers WHS duties, load charts and data plates, stability and the load centre, pre-start checks, refuelling or battery charging, and working around pedestrians. The practical side covers pre-operational checks, travelling forwards and in reverse with and without a load, stacking and de-stacking at height, working on ramps, and parking and shutting down safely. The assessment follows a set sequence of tasks with critical errors that mean an automatic fail, such as striking an obstacle, lifting over a person or travelling with the load raised. People who have driven a forklift unlicensed under supervision often pass first time. Complete beginners benefit from a longer course with more seat time.

Many people go from booking to working on a forklift within one to two weeks. You must be at least 18 to apply for a high risk work licence.

How does forklift licence renewal work?

High risk work licences last five years, and any class you add later expires with the licence. In NSW, renewal costs $88 for 2026–27 and SafeWork NSW sends a reminder about 60 days before expiry. If you lodge before the expiry date you can keep working while it's processed. Both NSW and Victoria allow renewal up to 12 months after expiry. After that you have to redo the training and assessment. To renew you must have kept your competency, so long breaks from driving can be a problem even with a current card.

Do you need a forklift licence on private property?

If you're operating a forklift as part of work, yes. SafeWork NSW says you generally need a high risk work licence for any high risk work, whether residential, commercial or industrial, regardless of the size of the job. A licence isn't avoided because the warehouse, farm shed or factory yard is private land. The exception is a trainee operating under the supervision of a licence holder while training for the licence. Driving a forklift on a public road also raises separate vehicle registration and driver licence questions, so check with your state transport authority.

How do you get forklift shifts once you're licensed?

New LF holders often start in pick-pack or storeperson roles where the forklift is part of the job, then move to dedicated driving roles once they have hours up. Reach truck and high-bay experience tends to pay more. As an indicative 2026 market observation, casual LF drivers commonly see $32–42/hr before shift penalties. See our forklift driver hourly rate guide and check award minimums on the Fair Work pay guides.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a forklift licence online?

No. You can sometimes complete theory online, but a high risk work licence needs a practical assessment by an accredited assessor, operating a real forklift through set tasks. Providers that promise a licence with no practical component are not offering a valid pathway. Book a course that includes face-to-face training and the formal assessment.

Can I use my NSW forklift licence in other states?

Yes. High risk work licences are recognised across Australia, so an LF licence issued in NSW can be used on worksites in other states. The licence must be issued by the state you normally live in, and if you move permanently you transfer it. Carry the card or digital licence so supervisors can check it on site.

What happens if I lose my forklift licence card?

Apply for a replacement through your state regulator. In NSW, a replacement high risk work licence costs $36 online or $43 through other channels in 2026-27, and the card is posted to you. If you still have the old card, SafeWork NSW requires it back within seven days of the new one arriving. You can look up your licence details on Verify NSW.

Does an LF licence cover a reach truck?

Reach trucks have a mast and an elevating carriage with forks, so they generally fall within the forklift truck class rather than the order-picking class. They handle differently from counterbalance forklifts, and most warehouses require a separate familiarisation or verification of competency before you drive one. Ask the RTO or your regulator if you are unsure about a specific machine.

Do employers pay for forklift licences?

Some do, especially for long-term warehouse roles and apprentices, but many casual roles expect you to hold the licence already. If an employer pays, ask whether there is a repayment clause if you leave early, and get it in writing. Paying for it yourself can make you easier to hire for casual shifts from your first week.
